Banapa is the Tiwi word for fishing net and the subject matter for Delores Tipuamantumirri’s shimmering ochre paintings that capture the movement of nets as they are cast out to sea. The patterning of the ochres – applied with the traditional Tiwi comb – freezes a split second in time as the sun reflects off the rippling nets and the waves beneath them.

Delores Tipuamantumirri is the only daughter of acclaimed artist Cornelia and senior elder Steven Tipuamantumirri (deceased).
